Report from the Workshop on Ethics, Technology, and the Future
Last week, the Mimir Center traveled to Hong Kong to take part in the Workshop on Ethics, Technology, and the Future, which took place on the 14th and 15th of June. The workshop was organized by the Hong Kong Catastrophic Risk Centre (HKCRC) at Lingnam University.
The conference was held at Lingnam’s offices in M+, a contemporary art museum located in the Cultural District of West Kowloon, with a stunning view of Hong Kong Island across Victoria Harbour.
From Mimir, presentations were given by Anders Sandberg, Julia Mosquera, Joe Roussos, Karim Jebari and Julia Adler. The other speakers included Eiji Maruyama, Takuya Niikawa, and Snow Li from Kobe University, and Adam Bradley, Song Fei, and Adam Gibbons from HKCRC.
Anders Sandberg opened the conference with his talk “Law, AI, and Leviathan” while a storm gathered outside.
Joe Roussos gave the talk “Longtermism, ignorance, and discounting the future". Julia Mosquera presented “Accidental panspermia: animal population ethics in space”, and Julia Adler presented her master thesis “Climate, conflict and democratic decline”. Karim Jebari closed the conference with the talk “Interspecies comparisons of animal welfare”.
The workshop was a great success, especially by giving us an excellent chance to meet and explore potential future collaborations.
Until next time!
