H. Orri Stefánsson

H. Orri Stefánsson is professor of practical philosophy and Wallenberg Academy Fellow at Stockholm University, and researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies. He completed his PhD in Philosophy from the London School of Economics in 2014.

Orri’s main areas of research are decision theory and ethics. He is currently working on questions about how to make policy choices in situations of severe uncertainty with a focus on climate policy, and also on the ethics of fatality risk distributions. Together with Katie Steele, he recently published the book Beyond Uncertainty: Reasoning with Unknown Possibilities.

At Mimir, he will be applying his work on decision-making under severe uncertainty to issues and policies that affect the long-term future of humanity, including existential risks. For instance, he will be considering ethical and philosophical issues raised by solar-geoengineering, that is, the proposal to reduce incoming sunlight to cool the earth’s atmosphere in order to counter global warming.
